The German troops are positioned just outside Paris. Georg, a German refugee, escapes to Marseille at the last moment. In his luggage he has the bequest of the writer Weidel, who has taken his own life, including a manuscript, letters, and the promise of a visa by the Mexican embassy. Only those who can prove that they will leave are allowed to stay in Marseille. Visas for the destination countries are required, the transit visa and the rare tickets for the ship's passage. Georg remembers Weidel's papers and assumes Weidel's identity.
