Buy Me a Gun
In a timeless Mexico where women disappear and society is ruled by drug cartels, nine-year-old Huck lives with her drug-addicted father on an abandoned baseball field. To protect herself from danger, she disguises herself as a boy and wears a Hulk mask. Together with a group of orphans who can camouflage themselves in the desert, she tries to escape the influence of the local cartel boss. The film BUY ME A GUN (original title: CÓMPRAME UN REVÓLVER) by director Julio Hernández Cordón was released in 2018 and premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section of the Cannes International Film Festival. The main roles are played by Matilde Hernández Guinea as Huck and Rogelio Sosa as her father. The dystopian narrative is reminiscent of works such as Mad Max and Lord of the Flies, with the story told from a child's perspective. The barren landscape and the ever-present threat of violence create an atmosphere of uncertainty and hopelessness. BUY ME A GUN is a mixture of drama and thriller that addresses social issues such as violence, drug addiction, and the disappearance of women.
