Jacobus Johannes Smits (Rotterdam, 1855 - Achterbos / Mol, 1928) was a Dutch-Flemish painter. Smits was so impressed by the Kempen that he settled permanently in Achterbos in 1888. He lived in poverty while working tirelessly on what he would later call "my simple work, poetic and real. He painted and drew many portraits.
