France 1792: After the arrival of revolutionary troops at his secluded mountain monastery, young monk Gabriel is forced to choose between traditional duty and modern freedom. Provence, far from the epicenter of the French Revolution: The monastery is requisitioned to serve as barracks by the revolutionary troops. The new ideas Gabriel discovers through the forced cohabitation between monks and soldiers don’t leave him indifferent. He has to take a choice between the old and the new. „The fact that Schneider can explore relatively complex ideas with just a few actors is a testament to his filmmaking skills and creative talents. Indeed, the director doesn’t seem to need much more to explore intricate material than a few good actors, some props and a camera.“ (hollywoodreporter.com)
