Two teenagers from the Japanese island of Amami-Oshima are confronted with death and transience. Both have to grow up, shed doubts and shyness. The introverted Kaito cannot get over the separation of his parents. At the summer festival, he watches a man drown in the sea, but refuses to talk about the experience. His friend Kyoko, the daughter of the local shaman, must deal with her mother's approaching death and her legacy to her. "The wonder of the first great love permeates the entire film. And it finds images for it that strike us all. STILL THE WATER is terrific." (ARD ttt)
